This interactive workshop explores the need for more inclusive data and the concept of “debiasing data”—the process of identifying and mitigating biases that are embedded in datasets, which can result in the misrepresentation or exclusion of marginalized voices. Participants will engage in a hands-on experience through three phases. In the Revelation phase, they will uncover gaps in representation by performing live Google searches to highlight underrepresented content. During the Curation phase, they will reflect on what authentic representation means to them and discuss their priorities, gaining insight into how certain content is prioritized online. Finally, in the Aspiration phase, participants will use generative AI tools to create visuals that express how they want to be represented, providing labels and prompts to guide the AI. By the end of the workshop, participants will better understand the impact of data bias and leave with ideas on how to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable digital landscape.
